Learn About Running Deer

Running Deer

Our ultimate goal is for our students to: Learn it. Live it. LOVE IT!

Running Deer is a Devon based charitable enterprise set up to support local people including those at risk of exclusion. Running Deer is also a DfE registered independent school (registration number: 878/6067) for young people with Special Educational Needs.

We provide access to learning outside the classroom, training, volunteering, life skills opportunities and work experience in traditional and rural skills, bushcraft and survival skills, equine therapy, conservation and related activities.

We offer opportunities with a difference! It is recognised that everyone benefits from having access to nature and physical activity. MIND’s Ecotherapy report 2007 revealed that a greener, more active lifestyle aids positive changes to our mental health. This is where our focus lies.

Running Deer projects are core to our aims and objectives. We have delivered may successful projects supporting people at risk of exclusion including bushcraft days, horticultural projects and school initiatives.

Butterdon Wood

Our 16 acre woodland is the home of Running Deer, based on the edge of beautiful Dartmoor in the heart of Devon.

Our ethos is to:

  • Be ethical in everything we do.
  • Be user led and transparent at all times.
  • Promote inclusiveness and support social enterprise.
  • Make a positive difference to people’s lives.
  • Provide opportunities with a difference!
  • Campaign on behalf of the environment at a local level.

Running Deer was established in 2011 out of an identified need to provide opportunities for children, young people and adults including those at risk of exclusion; and local people & communities living in isolated areas without easy access to employment or training.

We are a not for profit Community Interest Company Limited by Guarantee no: 7605814. It is run by a voluntary Board of Volunteer Directors who have a wealth of knowledge and experience between them.

Our ultimate goal is for our students to: Learn it. Live it. LOVE IT!

Butterdon Wood

Find out more about our woodland.

Butterdon Wood was part of the Fingle Wood Estate until we purchased it in 2013. As we remove the Larch and replant to native broadleaf trees it will become a community wood for everyone to enjoy.
