Running Deer’s Woodcraft Courses, run by qualified and experienced instructors are a fantastic way for you to try a new hobby, learn a new skill and spend a wonderful and relaxed day in our beautiful Butterdon Wood on the edge of Dartmoor.

Spoon Carving and Whittling

This course is perfect for beginners! The day will cover selecting the right timber, cleaving your wood and safe use of tools including axe, knives and crook

Materials and tools are provided. You will gain a good understanding of carving with a knife and axe as well as the basics on how to maintain your tools. Caution – spoon carving can be addictive.

Refreshments are provided and lunch (a ploughmans) is included in the price.

Please ensure that  you dress appropriately for the time of year and weather. Long trousers, walking boots or similar are essential.  We are more than happy if you would like to bring your own tools along.

Green Woodworking – make your own stool

This is a perfect course for beginners who want to have a go at green woodworking for the first time, or for those who want to improve their skills. Tools and equipment are provided.

You will spend a day at Butterdon Wood and be taken through the process of making your own stool from a log. You will select you timber, learn how to split it, make round tennon and mortice joints, shape the lets, make the seat and assemble it!

This is a practical course which you will find stimulating, demanding and fun. You will learn new skills and have your very own stool to take home at the end of the day.

Lunch (a ploughmans) is included in the price.
