We are delighted to have been awarded a Woodland Trust tree pack this year to help with the creation of our new broadleaf woodland to replace the larch that was felled last winter.
We opted for a wild wood tree pack which include hardy species suited to surviving upland and moorland areas. The pack includes downy birch, rowan, hazel, hawthorn, holly and crab apple. Some of these trees will also provide excellent habitat and food for our wildlife including our precious Dormice.
We have already started to transform Butterdon Wood with the planting of over 1000 trees so far, hazel, hawthorn, blackthorn, oak, cherry, birch and rowan. As part of our planting programme we are collecting tree seeds so that we can grow our own trees that are local to our area.
Unfortunately the squirrels found our newly planted seeds and ate them all! We are out and about collecting acorns, hazelnuts, sweet chestnuts plus berries including rowan and holly. This time we will make sure our seeds are protected from those pesky squirrels!
Tree Planting Days
We have two tree planting days this autumn and would welcome some help from schools! If you are a class that would like to be involved in planting some of our trees please get in touch!
Groups will be able to take a tour of our woodland and find out more about the wildlife we share it with. Be part of a very special event helping to create a brand new broadleaf woodland, finishing your visit with toasted marshmallows around the camp fire.
Tree planting days: Thursday 25th November 2016 and Friday 2nd December 2016. If you would like to arrange for a group visit please contact us.
Sponsor a Tree Scheme
If you would like to sponsor your very own tree we have a selection available in our Woodland Shop.
You will receive a personalised certificate with your own special message, information on the tree you have chosen, and a decorative map of the area where your tree is planted.
So why not be a part of this great project to create a new broadleaf woodland!
